Chapter 1 Overview of RTS Capabilities

BdeSoft released Version 2 of its popular RTS-Std (Real Time Stock) software program in March of 2006. The program is based on Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework, a fact many users may not know or care about. However, this characteristic is very important, because Microsoft will provide support for this next-generation framework. Because of this, our software will be closely integrated with future versions of Windows operating systems.

Now we have total of 4 RTS products: RTS-Std, RTS-Adv, RTS-Pro and RTS-AT, please see RTS introduction, list of Features.

Chapter 2 Before Installing the RTS (Real Time Stock) Software

  7. Using the 4-Layer Graphical Display Toolbar
  8. RTS provides a 4-layer graphical display that displays various chart indicators, stock quote sheets, and other data. The toolbar allows the user to rapidly show or hide particular layers when conditions change. Newly displayed layers usually appear on top of existing layers. Users accustomed to switching between windows to view multiple charts simultaneously will find this interface much more convenient. Users may also sort stocks by category, such as using one layer for call options and another for short stocks.

    3. Steps 2 and 3 can then be repeated until the suitable settings are found. When you have finished, click "OK" to close the window.

  9. Setting Chart Indicators
    1. RTS's Three Unique, Effective Default Indicators
    2. Picture 4-8

      1. Three Line Break (TLB) - our charting is unique in that our Three Line Break indicator can be drawn on top of a normal candle or bar chart. TLB is labeled and pictured in green background in the picture above.
      2. The TLB is an indicator used to show a stock's tendency to move towards a particular price target. The TLB also has the following features:

        • Clearly shows prices trends of both the market and individual stocks.
        • Ignores irregular price fluctuations.
        • Clearly displays the support area, resistance area, and heavy trading area.
        • Helps select the optimal time to enter and leave the market.
      3. VWAP trend line -which is labeled in red and pictured above in maroon.
      4. The VWAP trend line is generated using volume and price volatility data. The indicator has the following properties:

        • If the stock price is higher than the VWAP, the market is likely to go up. Since higher VWAP values correspond to larger gains, in this case, the VWAP can be used as a baseline value for the stock price.
        • If the stock price is lower than the VWAP, the market is likely to go down. Since lower VWAP values correspond to larger losses, the VWAP can be used as an upper limit for the stock price.
      5. TS (Trail Stop) - The trail stop is labeled in red and pictured in blue in the picture above.
      6. Based on user-defined settings, the TS will automatically adjust. Consider, for example, call options. If there is a small dip (less than the user-defined value) in the price of the option during an upwards trend, the TS will not activate. This is very beneficial, as it aids the user in maximizing potential gain while ensuring that the user will not lose that already earned.

    3. Commonly Used Indicators
      1. BB (Bollinger Band)

Bollinger bands are a popular indicator invented by analyst John Bollinger. Instead of using percentiles, it uses lines a certain number of standard deviations (SD) above and below the moving average, allowing the indicator to adjust to changing market conditions.

Bollinger bands are especially suitable for determining how overbought or oversold a market is. When the stock price meets or exceeds the upper part of the band, the market is overbought. When the stock price meets or is lower than the lower part of the band, the market is oversold. The default setting for Bollinger bands is 2 standard deviations above and below the simple moving average over a 20-day period.

      2. CCI (Commodity Channel Index)
      3. CCI is primarily used to analyze commodities markets, but can also be used for stock markets, equities markets, and other markets that involve buying and selling. CCI uses a methodology that is basically a type of moving average oscillator, comparing the difference between the closing price of a commodity and its moving average. CCI reflects cyclical trends, and is therefore suitable for markets that are very cyclical.

The main purpose of the CCI is to analyze short-term price fluctuations. Normal oscillations of CCI occur between -100 and +100. Values below -100 indicate oversold conditions, while values over +100 indicate overbought conditions.

Generally, the basic strategy of CCI is:

        • If  CCI rises from a value less than -100, buy.
        • If  CCI falls from a value greater than +100, sell.
      4. MA (Moving Average)
      5. The moving average is a basic but extremely useful trend indicator. The MA is a statistical analysis tool that averages stock prices over a certain time frame and then plots the averages on a curve. The curve can then be used to analyze trends.

The MA also has the following properties:

        • The MA can be compared directly with the stock price. When the stock price is higher than the MA, enter the market; when the stock price is lower than the MA, exit the market.
        • The long-term MA can be compared with the short-term MA. When the short-term MA is larger than the long-term MA, and both indicators are moving upwards, enter the market; when the short-term MA is smaller than the long-term MA and both indicators are moving downwards, exit the market.
        • The steeper the increase/decrease in the MA, the more rapid the increase/decrease in stock price is; the gentler the increase/decrease in the MA, the slower the increase/decrease in stock price is.
        • If the MA moves up and down, the market price is also swinging up and down. There is no clear trend and the stock price is fluctuating.
      6. EMA (Exponential Moving Average)
      7. The EMA is a modified version of the MA that weighs the values obtained from the MA at different times. More recent MA values are weighted more heavily by a constant factor, such that the weighting factors observe exponential behavior.

      8. MACD (Moving Average Convergence/Divergence)
      9. As implied by the name, the MACD is an indicator that shows the difference between two EMAs of closing prices. Its main features are:

        • When the market price increases rapidly, the short-term EMA and the long-term EMA diverge. The difference between the lines is considered positive, and the MACD increases.
        • When the increase market price slows down, the short-term EMA and the long-term EMA converge. The difference between the lines is considered positive, but the MACD decreases.
        • When the market price rapidly decreases, the short-term EMA and the long-term EMA diverge. The difference between the lines is considered negative, and the MACD decreases.
        • When the decrease in market price slows down, the short-term EMA and the long-term EMA converge. The difference between the lines is considered negative, but the MACD increases.

  10. Link Charts with Quote Sheets and Hotlists
  11. The user may choose to link the stock charts with the quote sheet display and/or the scanning system. Any changes or updates made to one display will automatically update other linked displays.

To make it easy to link displays, each chart or quote sheet can be grouped in to one of eight non-black color groups. To link two displays, just set their color group to the identical color. (In the pictures below, both the stock chart and quote sheet are set to blue.) Black cannot be used because is the default color for new charts and quote sheets, so it has the automatic linking disabled.

    Picture 4-9

  12. Setting Up a Multi-Chart Display
  13. The multi-chart display is an extremely valuable function of RTS. It allows the simultaneous viewing of twenty different stock charts. Users can create their own filters and stock sequences, and our program will automatically display the charts in the proper order. Users need not waste time clicking to scroll between displays; our program will show the graphs in a patchwork-quilt display.

In order to correctly link the stock charts with the results of the user-defined filters, the two must have the same color selected in the top right corner.

To set up MultiLink, one only needs to left-click on the relevant chart, right-click to open the options menu, and select "Set Hotlist Rank Option." Repeating with subsequent stock charts automatically puts them in the specified order.

Afterwards, if you filter the stock list again, the stock charts will automatically change. Enabling this feature allows us to help make user transactions more convenient, helping users make a larger per-transaction profit.

The figure below shows the MultiLink feature, with FMX as the first chart, RIMM as the second, and NTES as the third.

Chapter 5 Using the Quote Sheet Display

  1. RTS Quote Sheet Display Overview
  2. The three following pictures show the main RTS Quote Sheet window. Pictures 5-1 and 5-2 both show all selectable options in the window. The difference is that Picture 5-1 shows the default display, while Picture 5-2 shows the Advanced Color Skin. For details on how to use the quote sheet, please read the following sections. Picture 5-3, however, shows only some of the columns available. This display is useful for users who lack wide-screens on which to view all the data. The other columns can be accessed by using the second scroll bar, as per the picture.

    Picture 5-1

    Picture 5-2

    Picture 5-3

  3. Quote Shee Headings
  4. The quote sheet contains 18 headings:

    1. S: Symbol - Stock ticker symbol.
    2. L: Last - Last transaction price.
    3. Net - Change from previous day's  closing price.
    4. N%: Net Percent - Percent change from previous day's  closing price.
    5. NO: Net Open - Change from the current day's  opening price. This value is calculated by subtracting the current day's  opening price from the current price. This value reflects only price changes after the opening bell and has no relation with the previous day's  closing price.
    6. V%: Vol Percent - Percentage of the average trading volume. It compares the current day's  trading volume with the trading volumes of previous days. This figure alerts the user to rapid changes in volume.
    7. R%: Range Percent - Price range percentage. This figure compares the current price with the daily high and the daily low. For example, if the current price is $48, the daily high is $50, and the daily low is $46, then the Range Percent value is 50%. Range Percent is calculated using the following formula: [(Current Price-Daily Low)/(Daily High-Daily Low)]*100%.
    8. High Highest price from the current day.
    9. Low - Lowest price from the current day.
    10. Open - Today's  opening price.
    11. Bid - Current bidding price.
    12. Ask - Current asking price.
    13. TotVol: Total Volume - Number of shares traded during the current day.
    14. PrvCls: Previous Close - Previous day's  closing price.
    15. Name - Name of the corporation.
    16. Sector - Specific industry sector that the corporation falls in.
    17. Name & Sector - Name of the corporation and the sector it falls in.
    18. ET: Entry Time -Time which the stock should be entered into the quote sheet.

      Picture 5-7

    9. Additional Features
    10. Right-clicking on the quote sheet yields more menu options.

      • 5.1. Color Group Selection
      • If the user right-clicks on the quote sheet, and scrolls down to "Color Group Selection via? " the user will see two options. (See picture below.) If the "Mouse Over" option is selected, the corresponding stock chart will automatically appear when the mouse moves over a ticker symbol in the quote sheet. If the "Mouse Left Click" option is selected, the corresponding stock chart will appear only if the user clicks on the ticker symbol in the quote sheet.

        Picture 5-8

      • 5.2. Layers
      • There are four layers that can be selected by right-clicking on the quote sheet via the "Layer" menu. Like stock charts, each quote sheet can be placed on one of four layers. This is a commonly used feature that increases your effective screen size by a multiple of four.

        Picture 5-9

      • 5.3. Adding or Removing Columns to the Quote Sheet
      • Right-clicking on the quote sheet and selecting "Add/Delete Column" allows the users to modify the columns on the quote sheet. When the option is selected, the Column Editor should appear in a new window. (See picture below.) To add a column, check the box to the left of the column you wish to add. Uncheck the box if you wish to remove the column. You may also rearrange the order of the columns by selecting a column and moving it using the two blue arrows on the right. When the display and order of the quote sheet columns have been successfully changed, the user may choose to save the settings by clicking the "Default" button. Every subsequent quote sheet opened will show the columns in the order prescribed in the default.

        Picture 5-10

      • 5.4. Importing Symbols
      • This is a very useful feature. The user can save the ticker symbols of companies in different sectors into different Word (.doc) or Notepad (.txt) documents, and import them as a batch when needed. There is no need to enter each ticker symbol separately, markedly increasing efficiency. This feature can also be used with MultiLink to view the activity in various sectors quickly. The default directory is <C:\Program Files\Bdesoft\RTS\Import>. Stock symbols are not case-sensitive. (For example, ADBE, adsk, and YHoo are all valid entries.)

      • 5.5. Export Data
      • margin-left:99.0pt">This is another useful feature that allows users to export data in a quote sheet into a .csv or .txt format. The first is especially useful is further analysis using Excel is desired at a later date.

      • 5.6.Clear All Symbols
      • To delete all entries on the quote sheet, click on the "Clear All Symbols" button.

      • 5.7. Remove Sort
      • Selecting the "Remove Sort" option reverts the quote sheet to its previous configuration.

      • 5.8. Advanced Color Skin
      • Selecting the "Advanced Color Skin" option changes the quote sheet display to that pictured in Pictures 5-2 and 5-3.

      • 5.9. Show Row Header
      • Selecting this option toggles the display of the leftmost numbered column on and off. Pictures 5-1 and 5-2 have the row header enabled, while Picture 5-3 has the row header disabled.

      • 5.10. Always Display Symbol Column
      • Selecting this option toggles the display of the "Symbol" column on and off.

      • 5.11. Clear Highlight
      • Selecting any element in the quote sheet highlights that element with a blue background. Selecting the "Clear Highlight" option removes the highlights.

Chapter 6 Advanced Real-Time Stocks Listing (Scanning) System

The Advanced Real-Time Stocks Listing (Scanning) System is similar to the quote sheet in that it displays relevant financial data about a stock, but it is different in that it is completely automated. It automatically sweeps the market for stocks that meet certain specified criteria and lists them in a tabulate. The module can easily be paused or resumed by clicking the appropriate button in the top-right corner. Pausing stops refreshing the chart with new data, allowing the user to analyze data currently displayed on the chart. (See Picture 6-1.) When the user is done, he or she may press "Resume" to continue updating the chart with the most recent data. (See Picture 6-2.)

Picture 6-1

Picture 6-2

  1. Preliminary Listing (Scanning) System
  2. RTS has three categories of pre-programmed lists, each of which is explained below.

    1. Hot Lists

      Picture 6-3

      1. %Gainers "Largest gainers (in terms of percentage).
      2. %Losers "Largest losers (in terms of percentage).
      3. 52 Week High "Stocks currently priced at their 52 week high.
      4. 52 Week Low "Stocks currently priced at their 52 week low.
      5. Dynamic Long "Stocks currently in an upwards trend.
      6. Dynamic Short "Stocks currently in a downwards trend.
      7. Most Active "Stocks with the most trading volume.
      8. Unfilled Gaps "Stocks with unfilled gaps.
      9. Unusual Volume "Stocks currently trading at an unusual volume.
    2. Day Trading Stocks
    3. Picture 6-4

This list first identifies the current month's  most volatile stocks and then sorts them by the degree volatility. For example, the "Range $2+"list displays stocks whose daily high/low difference averages $2 or greater over the past month.

These stock lists are usually the best candidates for day-trading. RTS automatically sweeps the entire market every month and updates this list.

    4. Sectors
    5. RTS helps the user quickly analyze upwards and downwards trends in various economic sectors. Stocks in these sectors often follow these trends as well.

Users can easily use the Sector Lists to determine the best performers in upwards-trending sectors or the worst performers in the downwards-trending sectors. One can then coordinate purchases and sales with this information and the overall market performance using filters to dramatically increase efficacy and increase per transaction profits.

    6. My Scan List
    7. The "My Scan List" contains user-defined scans. To create a new scan list, save a list of stocks in a document in the following directory: "C:\Program Files\Bdesoft\RTS\myScanList". The stocks can be listed in one column or many, but they must be separated by periods. The entries are not case-sensitive - ADBE, adsk, and YHoo are all valid stock symbols. Once saved, these scans are accessed like the other scans and are visible under the "My Scan List" option.

  3. Filtering Lists
  4. All RTS products use the same List Filter. Our List Filter is one of our most powerful yet easy to use features. It works for all Hotlist and Scan Modules to narrow the candidates down into a more manageable one, like 3 to 15 stocks.

For example, a day trader only want to trade stocks satisfying the following conditions: daily trading volume larger than 800,000 shares, stock price greater than $30 (considered a high price for this market), a higher closing price than yesterday's high (selecting for upwards-trending stocks), trading volume 200% the average trading volume (selecting for relatively large increases). If this day trader uses a different method to find stocks satisfying these requirements, it will most likely take a very long time to find this information. However, using RTS, it may take only ten to twenty seconds to set these criteria and find the stocks.

Furthermore, it is very easy to make changes to the criteria. If the results seen after filtering are too few in number, one can relax the criteria; if the results seen after filtering are too many in number, one can tighten the criteria. For example, if there are too many results after filtering, one could change the stock price from $15 to $30 or change the daily volume form 200,000 shares to 800,000 shares. Below is a detailed explanation of the various criteria settings and usage instructions.

    Table: List Filter

Real Time Stock Software List Filter ºòßx¹ÉºY™zϵ½y

    1. Average Volume (Avg Vol) Greater/Less Than

"Avg Volume" is the average volume calculated over the previous thirty days. This helps the user focus on stocks with relatively high trading volumes, neglecting the less profitable stocks with lower volumes. This can also be set to a range of volumes, such as "greater than 300,000" but "less than 5,000,000." For most investors, we recommend that this value be held greater than 300,000.

    2. Vol / Avg Vol Greater Than

"Vol / Avg Vol Greater Than" filters out stocks whose intraday trading volume accumulated from open is larger than the average trading volume of the same interval during the past five days.

It is one of the most powerful and useful filtering options, identifying stocks which undergo large increases in trading volume. When an investor buys or sells a large amount of a certain stock, the stock price will change. If many people all buy a stock, the stock price will rise; if many people sell, the price will fall. Using this filtering option allows users to easily determine if there is a correlation between an upwards trend and an increase in volume. If there is such a correlation, it is most likely that the upwards trend will persist for awhile. we recommend that this filtering option be set between 150% and 200%, representing a 50% to 100% increase over average trading volumes.

    3. Vol / Avg Vol Less Than

"Vol / Avg Vol less Than" filters out stocks whose intraday trading volume accumulated from open is less than the average trading volume of the same interval during the past five days.

Sudden decreases in trading volume do not necessarily mean that the volume will not increase later, but rather that the stock may rebound at a later time. Also, because the stock's trends are not immediately obvious, overbought or oversold indicators (e.g. Stochastics, RSI, MFI) may be used in conjunction to determine if they are potentially profitable stocks.

    4. Option

This function is good for trader who like to trader options.

    5. Open

The "Open" option shows only stocks whose opening price is inside or outside the previous day's range. If "Inside" is selected, only stocks whose opening price is lower than the previous day's daily high and higher than the previous day's daily low will be allowed through the filter. If "Outside" is selected, only stocks whose opening price is higher than the previous day's daily high or lower than the previous day's daily low will be allowed through the filter.

    6. Gap

The "Gap" option identifies stocks that have experienced a gap (either up or down) on the current day. The size of the gap (in either dollar amount or percentage) can also be used to filter stocks further.

    7. Price Greater/Less Than

The settings on the "Price Greater/Less Than" option depends largely on the user's preference of stock type and stock price. Since most users would like to have a range of at least $0.25 to $0.50 in price. For most day traders, try price >$20.

    8. Last-Yesterday Close (Last-Yest. Close)

"Last-Yest. Close" filters out stocks based on the difference between the current price and the previous day's closing price. This filtering option helps the user find potentially-profitable stocks with a large price change from the previous day's close, as well as stocks with small price changes to lower the potential risk. For example, a day trader who wants a price difference of greater than $0.50 should select "GT 0.50 Dollars," while a day trader who wants a price difference less than $1.00 should select "LT 1.0 Dollars."

    9. Above Previous Daily High By

The "Above Previous Daily High By" filtering option selects only stocks whose current price is greater than the previous day's daily high by a prescribed amount. If set to 0, all stocks whose current price is higher than yesterday's daily high are displayed; if set to .25, all stocks whose current price is $0.25 higher than yesterday's daily high are displayed. If one believes that today's daily high will be higher than the previous day's daily high, this value should be set to -.10 (negative $0.10).

    10. Below Previous Daily Low By

The "Below Previous Daily Low By" filtering option selects only stocks whose current price is lower than the previous day's daily low by a prescribed amount. If set to 0, all stocks whose current price is lower than yesterday's daily low are displayed; if set to .25, all stocks whose current price is $0.25 lower than yesterday's daily low are displayed. If one believes that today's daily low will be lower than the previous day's daily low, this value should be set to +.10 (positive $0.10).

    11. First N 5 Minute Bar

The "First N 5 Minute Bar" is another powerful RTS filtering option that can identify stocks that suddenly trend upwards. For example, many traders enter the market immediately when the current price is greater than the current 15-minute high. Such a trader would input "15 minutes" into the above field. Although users can enter a time intervals, intervals of 15, 30 minutes are most typical. In particular, since fluctuations in stock price are largest immediately after the market opens, setting this field to 30 minutes can help identify potentially profitable transaction immediately following the initial unstable period. This feature is also useful during the second half of the trading session. If the stock price during the second half is outside the price range of the first 30 minutes after opening, it is more likely that there will be a new daily high or daily low. This consideration is very important in determining whether or not to enter the market during the second half of the trading session. RTS typically recommends intervals of 15, 30, or 60 minutes, using "Above" when trading call options and using "Below" when selling short.

    12. High/Low of Last X Days

The "High/Low of Last X Days" filtering option is useful for discovering stocks that have achieved new highs or new lows. For example, to find stocks that have achieved a three-day high, "GT" and "3" should be input in the selected fields. Similarly, "LT" and "5" should be input to find stocks that have achieved a five-day low.

    13. Moving Average (MA) Scans

There are many ways to use "Moving Average Scan" filtering options. For example, one can use the option to search for stocks whose stock charts exhibit upwards or downwards trends. When a stock's price is grater than its 10, 20, 50, or 200-day moving average, its tendency upwards is clear. This feature helps identify the strongest and weakest stocks in a particular market. Many traders tend to trade stocks which have just past their 50-day moving average. To identify stocks which satisfy this criterion, that trader would check "UP" and ¡°50¡± in the appropriate fields to find stocks whose previous day's closing price is less than the 50-day moving average and last closing price is greater than the 50-day moving average. Of course, the trader can select a different number of days for the moving average calculating if so desired.

    14. ADTR-Average day true range:

This setting can let you find stocks that have been very volatile or have rested for the last few days and may be ready for explosive moves. For example, if you want to find stocks that have moved $8 or more in the last 3 days select Range GT (Greater Than) $8 in last 3 days.
